There is a lot of gender crossing in science fiction costuming — sometimes for humor, but not always.
One man told me he’s happy to wear a dress for the dramatic performances he does at a local con because he’s secure in his masculinity.
Others may find it an accepting place to express independent gender identities that don’t conform to the societal gender binary. (SF fans are notoriously non-conformist.)
Cons are also liminal spaces by nature — where the everyday is turned on its head. So they attract all sort of play, including gender play, sexual play, and violent references, even from those who would not be interested in exploring those realms outside the con.
At any rate, I love this picture!
